Uttarakhand’s first and the nation’s sixteenth Regional Science Centre will be inaugurated and opened to the public on Wednesday. The Union Minister of State for Culture and Tourism will inaugurate the RSC at Jhajhra, Dehradun, in the presence of Chief Minister Harish Rawat and others, said Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology (UCOST) Director-General Rajendra Dobhal.
Addressing the media here on Tuesday, Dobhal said that the centre developed in collaboration with National Council for Science Museums (NCSM) at Vigyan Dham premises at Jhajhra, Dehradun will be the country’s sixteenth RSC.
This RSC has been built at a cost of about Rs. 12.5 crore on about 8.5 acre land with the expenditure being shared equally by the Central and State Governments. Various exhibits and facilities have been incorporated in the RSC to achieve its purpose of inculcating scientific temperament among the masses in general and youngsters in particular.
A Himalayan gallery here will depict the geological creation of the Himalaya, its environmental aspects and services and among other features. A replica of the Amarnath cave in Jammu and Kashmir has been made to explain the science behind the formation of the ice Lingam of Shiva at Amarnath.
Varied other features using latest scientific developments, an auditorium with 300-seating capacity, a three-dimensional theatre, conference hall, innovation laboratory, library, a science park and science demonstration room among other facilities will be available to facilitate information on latest scientific discoveries, experiments, techniques and technologies through tangible forms.
The RSC will also have models of dinosaurs, display mechanisms and recreational-interactive displays demonstrating various scientific principles and theories. Scientific law based interactive exhibits here include ‘Gravity Chair’, ‘Whispering Garden’, ‘Musical Bar’, ‘Sympathic Swing’, ‘Birding Cage’, ‘Eco Tube’ and ‘Perspective House Some of the scientific law based interactive exhibits expected to attract visitors.
In addition to these, intelligent materials, new trends in nuclear power generation, cloud computing, robotics, and carbon nano-tube and graphene along with various other exhibits will be displayed here which the authorities hope to develop into a centre of choice for students and tourists to understand science.
It will also cater to the need for development of scientific temperament and rational thinking among people of Uttarakhand while also raising awareness on the importance of conservation of natural resources. On the lines of RSC, a district level sub-RSC at Almora has also been approved for which the required land has already been allocated.
