Museum professionals from 33 different museums and science centres of India are participating
National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), an autonomous organisation under Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India is organising a National level Workshop on ‘Digital Engagement of Museums’ in collaboration with British Council. Museums professional from 33 different museums and science centres of India are participating in the workshop which is scheduled to be held from 22nd – 24th September 2014 at Central Research and Training Laboratory (CRTL) on 22nd & 24th September and at Science City, Kolkata and at Birla Industrial and Technological Museum, Kolkata on 23rd September. Carolyn Royston, former head of Digital Media at Imperial War Museum, UK and Charlotte Sexton, former head of Digital Media at National Gallery, London and President at Museum Computer Network (MCN) will guide the Indian Museum professionals on how to create a digital engagement program in museums of India.
This workshop is highly relevant in current Museum scenario in India as many Museums in India are planning to increase its reach to wider audiences through digital programs. This workshop will address many common issues like developing or improving website of the museums, how to interact at the Social Media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube etc. How to use mobile technology to reach to its target audience, digitisation of collections etc.
Shri G. S. Rautela, Director General, NCSM and Smt. Sujata Sen, Director, Eastern India, British Council will inaugurate the program on 22nd September at NCSM Campus in presence of Shri A. S. Manekar, Deputy Director General, Shri S. Chaudhuri, Director, Central Research and Training Laboratory (CRTL), Shri Samarendra Kumar, Director (Hqrs), Shri A. D. Chaudhury, Director, Science City, Kolkata, Shri E. Islam, Director, Birla Industrial and Technological Museum (BITM), Kolkata. Carolyn Royston and Charlotte Sexton will also address in the inaugural session.
After the inaugural session, the workshop will start at 11.30 AM with the topic ‘Why digital is important for museums’. This session will focus on digital evolution of museums from across the world, their roles and responsibilities for digital delivery etc.
Session after lunch will focus on different channels of delivery such as Websites, Mobile, In-gallery, Interactive, Social Media etc. for different type of audiences like Families, Enthusiasts, Tourists, Academics, Teachers and others. This session will explore what content would be suitable for different audiences and the digital ways to reach out to them.
In the next two days digital experts from UK will explore on the topic by citing case studies and their practical experiences. Indian Museum professionals will get a chance to interact among themselves and with the experts in the Question and Answer session to be held in the noon of 24th September 2014. The workshop shall end in the afternoon of 24th September 2014.
